Why is Vishu celebrated in Kerala ?

In Kerala, Vishu is observed as the start of the spring season and the Hindu New Year. The Malayalam calendar's first day is commemorated by a celebration that is marked by family get-togethers, feasting, and the burning of oil lamps. The preparation of the Vishu Kani, a display of auspicious artefacts signifying wealth and good fortune for the upcoming year, is the festival's major draw.

Vishu is celebrated in various ways, including:

  1. Preparation of the Vishu Kani: Family members wake up early in the morning and view the Vishu Kani, which consists of auspicious items such as rice, fruits, flowers, coins, mirrors, and yellow cloth.

  2. Family Gatherings: People visit their relatives and friends, exchange greetings and gifts, and enjoy feasts together.

  3. Lighting of Oil Lamps: Homes and temples are decorated with oil lamps, creating a festive atmosphere.

  4. Temple Visits: Devotees offer prayers and offerings at Hindu temples and participate in religious rituals.

  5. Fireworks and Processions: Some communities organize parades, fireworks displays, and cultural programs to mark the occasion.

Overall, Vishu is a time for family, friends, and community to come together and celebrate the start of a new year filled with hope and prosperity.
