A legendary king and chef from the Vana Parva book of the Mahabharata, Nala was the king of Nishadha and the son of Veerasena. He was known for his culinary skills and wrote the first book on cooking, Pakadarpanam, and was said to be able to cook a meal without fire. He was also skilled with horses and married Princess Damayanti of Vidarbha. After losing his kingdom in a game of dice, Nala and Damayanti were expelled from their land, separated, and eventually reunited after many years.
